Wisdom Teeth Treatment

The 3rd and final set of molars to erupt is usually referred to as the “wisdom teeth.” Some people’s wisdom teeth begin to come in during their teen years, while other adults are closer to the age of 30 before they are fully developed.
Although certain individuals never have any problems with their wisdom teeth, others may be plagued by pain, discomfort, swelling, or infection. The symptoms typically occur off-and-on as the teeth are developing, or may remain constant until the tooth is removed.

Our Marco Island dentists may recommend having your wisdom teeth extracted if they are:

  • Impacted against adjacent teeth
  • Partially erupted
  • Infected
  • Decaying
  • Causing the other teeth to crowd together

The location of wisdom teeth makes them difficult to keep clean. And with little room in the jaws, they typically only erupt partially through the gums. This can allow food and bacteria to creep under the gumlines, leading to an abscess or gum disease.

If you have a tooth that is too badly damaged to restore with a filling, crown, or root canal – then it’s usually recommended to have the tooth pulled

Do My Wisdom Teeth Need to be Pulled?

Removing the 3rd molars can help you avoid potential infections or better manage your oral hygiene. At Marco Prime Dental, we use a panoramic x-ray or 3D CT scan to assess the location, size, and developmental stages of the wisdom teeth. These high definition images make it possible for us to determine whether or not you need to have the teeth extracted.
